Only 39 To Go!

June 22, 2009 Filed Under: hiking

Last week J and I headed to Lake Placid. @HighPeaksResort was having an amazing special that resulted in us staying in the most gorgeous hotel I've ever been to for 49 bucks a night. It was heaven. What was not so heaven-y was our trip up Whiteface Mountain. J and I have decided to climb all 46 of the High Peaks in the Adirondacks. Prior to this trip, we'd done five, and despite various bumps and bruises (and a huge hole torn in the back of my hiking pants and my upper thigh), the view from the top has been worth it. And there's no way we would have seen those sights if we hadn't done the … [Read more...]

An Interview with Author Mandy Hubbard

June 10, 2009 Filed Under: author interviews

I don't usually read Young Adult books, but I have to say that I am beyond excited about the release of PRADA & PREJUDICE tomorrow. It's the first time in a long time that I will be at the book store looking for a book on its release date. There are two reasons for this.1. The premise is fantastic and it sounds like such a fun book (it's also getting great reviews!!!). "Fifteen-year-old Callie buys a pair of real Prada pumps to impress the cool crowd on a school trip to London. Goodbye, Callie the clumsy geek-girl, hello popularity! But before she knows what’s hit her, Callie wobbles, … [Read more...]

Ever have the urge to call someone a buttface in public?

June 8, 2009 Filed Under: STELLA

Even though I've been busy, I've been working to socialize Stella. And slowly, but surely, she is warming up and getting more comfortable with new situations. Anyone who knows dogs has commented on how sweet she is, despite her fear issues. I talk to neighbors when we go on walks, so she can get used to being around people she doesn't know. We take both dogs to a German Shepherd playgroup once a month. Stella and I go for walks with my friend M and her dog on an almost weekly basis (which is, admittedly, more about socializing me). And any time I have an excuse to go to the pet store, … [Read more...]

Take a look ahead!

June 2, 2009 Filed Under: Boston kicks ass, STAY, writing

I've been really stuck in my head. I've written a couple of posts to put up here and then decided they were stupid. Not that I'm saying this one isn't stupid. I just decided it was high time I put SOMETHING up here. I've been writing, gardening, writing, writing, running and writing. And eating and sleeping (when J isn't keeping me awake by driving imaginary trucks in his sleep) a little too. This lifestyle doesn't really make for the most exciting of blog posts, but I have to tell you, I freaking love my life. My editor is incredible. She gets my main character and what I want this book … [Read more...]

Here, there, and everywhere

May 11, 2009 Filed Under: This is what you get when I can't come up with a real post.

I finally figured out a plan for the garden this year. Now I just have to tackle the weeds. They are obscene and I hate them. But I'm looking forward to a summer with lots of strawberries and raspberries. And possibly some blueberries. We had a frost warning last night and another one tonight. IT'S FREAKING MAY! Stop it with the frost already.Joan, from writing group has a story up at Literary Mama, and it's awesome. Go read it.J and I are on week three of marathon training. I think we've decided to stop and revise when we hit ten miles. Then we'll start working on speed, stride, … [Read more...]

100 Things – 71-79

May 6, 2009 Filed Under: 100 Things

71. I rarely spell the word biscuit right on the first try. 72. I played Noah in a summer camp production of a musical about Noah's Ark when I was 13 or so. Spirit-glued beard and everything. 73. I hate the sound of birds chirping. I'm kind of embarrassed by this, but it's the truth. Like nails on a blackboard. There are tons of birds around our house b/c Mrs. Gnome feeds them, and I wish they'd just shut up already. And also, it would be nice if they'd stop pooping on our bedroom window.74. I really, truly, and deeply love being 32. 75. I've always thought it would be fun to drive a … [Read more...]

Because I don’t have enough on my plate . . .

April 30, 2009 Filed Under: And I ran, I ran so far away

I'm starting marathon training. Now, don't get all excited. I don't actually have any plans to run a marathon in the near future. I simply need some goals and a structure for building my strength and endurance.I used to run seven miles a day, five or six days a week. It was hell on my joints, and I eventually gave up. But then I discovered barefoot running, and have dabbled in running on and off ever since, without any joint pain. (Warning: You HAVE to work on your stride before you can go back to, or begin, a running regimen with barefoot running). When I working on revisions for my … [Read more...]

Good fences really do make good neighbors!

April 28, 2009 Filed Under: dogs, fences, neighbors

So, the fence is up, and I have to say, it has done wonders in quelling my neighbor-related angst. It's also made having two German Shepherds so much easier (except when they are outside and it starts raining, and we don't realize it, and they decide to mud wrestle in the garden and then run through the house).Argo has pretty much said, "Hey, it was nice knowing you, but I have a yard. . ." That dog can spend all day lying in the shade sniffing the breeze. He is blissfully happy.Stella, on the other hand, was more excited about all the attention she gets when Argo is outside. If she did go … [Read more...]

My Oasis to Rally Upon

April 15, 2009 Filed Under: J

Two weeks ago, J and I celebrated our 5 year wedding anniversary. I meant to write about it then. I have a hard time writing about the people I love the most. Much in the same way I have a hard time writing out notes in birthday cards. Because, you know, I write. That's what I do. And I feel like people always expect me to be super eloquent with what I write - to have the right words. But when it comes to the people I love, everything gets so jumbled up in my emotions, and I don't feel like anything I write could do them justice. Peter Mulvey has a song called "Words Too Small to Say," and … [Read more...]

My New Neighbor

April 11, 2009 Filed Under: who are the people in your neighborhood, woodpeckers are bastards

Monday, I was settling in to do some editing, when I heard a noise that sounded a lot like a jackhammer off in the distance. I figured it would stop, but it didn't. It felt like every time I started to type, the noise started again. Twenty-minutes later, I was starting to lose it. I walked to the other side of the house, and it got louder. It sounded closer than I'd originally thought, and less like a jackhammer. More like someone drilling metal.I walked around the house (followed by my canine entourage) muttering "What the hell is Mrs. Gnome doing?" and cursing our house, our … [Read more...]
