I miss all the excitement.

February 17, 2012 Filed Under: Argo the wonder dog, STELLA

Stella hates the stove.  When it's in use, she lies on the kitchen floor watching us carefully like she's expecting the oven door to open up and swallow us whole.  She won't eat, she won't drink, she won't let the person cooking out of her sight.  And even when the stove is not in use, if she has to walk past it, sometimes she'll do the same quick little scurry run we all did as kids when we didn't want the monsters under our bed to grab our ankles. She's never been hurt by our stove, there's never been an incident in the time we've had her, but on the list of Stella's nemeses, the stove is … [Read more...]

More cute than annoying

January 31, 2012 Filed Under: Argo the wonder dog, German Shepherds, STELLA

If I wear flip flops in the house, Stella feels it's her job to follow me around and step on the backs of them while I walk. When it's raining or snowing, Argo likes to bug me to let him outside, but then he'll come right back in, because he likes being dried off with big fluffy towel we keep by the door. If I tell the dogs, "Gentle," when I hand them a treat, they will take it carefully from my hand.  If I don't, they will practically take my fingers off.  If I give them more than one treat, I have to say "gentle," every time I hand one over. … [Read more...]

Ridiculous things I’ve caught myself saying to the dogs

January 27, 2012 Filed Under: Argo the wonder dog, STELLA

Do you like my singing?  Exactly!  Because it's fabulous.Don't yell at me. It's not my fault you fell off the bed.  I don't appreciate your tone, young lady.I know what you're trying to say, you're trying to say it's time for breakfast 'cause it's breakfast time! Oooh! It's my turn on the treadmill.  You already had your turn!I'm stress eating.  Don't judge me.Yeah, well, I don't get a treat every time I want one either. … [Read more...]

Day Six: We’re out of coffee filters. The natives are getting restless.

December 12, 2011 Filed Under: Argo the wonder dog, STELLA, writing

So J was away on a business trip for a week.  I stocked up on food before he left, and with the exception of a workout and meeting up for coffee with my favorite teacher from high school (who happened to be in town for a conference), I did not leave the house all week, and I barely talked on the phone. I wrote, and then I wrote some more, and then I thought about writing, watched TV for a bit (Oh my gosh! TERRIERS!!!!), and wrote again.  I let go of schedules.  I slept when I felt like sleeping and ate when I remembered to. I missed J like crazy, but I was at a point in my manuscript where I … [Read more...]

Stupid Cold

October 21, 2011 Filed Under: Argo the wonder dog, gluten-free, STELLA, the cat, the dreaded lurgy

I don't get sick gracefully.  I have little patience for myself when I'm not at 100% and I'm not good at relaxing.  The dreaded lurgy hit our house this week, slowed everything down, and forced us to cancel our super fun weekend plans with our favorite people. Instead of showing you all what a champion whiner I can be, here are a few things that are cheering me up.Teeny tiny gluten-free bunny cookies.I don't know if it's helping or not, but it tastes good.I feel like Siri really gets me.The flash on my new phone turns Argo into Alien Dog.And, it's a terrible picture, but this:The cat suddenly … [Read more...]

Stella is not amused

October 14, 2011 Filed Under: music, STELLA

I woke up this morning with a little excess energy, and maybe I had a little more coffee than usual.  Plus, it's fall.  The dogs definitely have what Bark Magazine calls the "zoomies," because the air is crisp and clear.  And I think I might have the zoomies a bit myself. So, this morning, after J left for work, I cranked up The Cure and jumped in the shower and was possibly singing very loudly, and possibly also singing all the instrumental parts in addition to the lyrics and having a grand old time doing so . . . until I got out of the shower and found Stella, lying on the bathroom floor … [Read more...]

Writing Binge

July 11, 2011 Filed Under: Argo the wonder dog, dogs, STELLA, writing

At certain points in my writing process, the best way to work is to completely dive in.  So when J left this weekend to go camping with the Larkin men, I used the opportunity to throw myself a one-woman writing retreat. I loaded up on supplies: Easy meals so I wouldn't have to spend time cooking, and super yummy snacks to bribe myself with if my attention started to wane. Then I took the plunge.  Aside from coming up for air to play with the dogs several times a day, I lived in my manuscript all weekend long.  And it was blissful. What were you up to this past weekend? … [Read more...]

My dog pack

July 7, 2011 Filed Under: Argo the wonder dog, beautiful things, dogs, STELLA

So, yesterday, I let the dogs out while I was exercising.  I finished up and was about to go take a shower.  I closed the door to the yard, and made sure I closed the bedroom door, because Argo, when left to his own devices in the bedroom will strip the blankets off the bed (I don't know why).  I double checked to make sure Stella wasn't in the bedroom, because I've accidentally closed her in there before, and she gets upset about it.I was just about to turn the water on in the shower when I heard the hollow heaving sound of Argo starting to puke.  I raced to the door and opened it, only to … [Read more...]

A sappy post about my dogs teaching me a life lesson.

May 12, 2011 Filed Under: Argo the wonder dog, STELLA

I tend to be really hard on myself.  It's my default setting.  Since I was diagnosed with ADD at 18, a big part of my journey has been getting to a point where I let go of the qualities I wish I had, and work with what I bring to the table.  When I can do that, oh, life is glorious!  I can laugh at my quirks and make allowances for the things I need to do to be productive and happy.  I don't begrudge myself the time I need to zone out, my weird filing system, or the fact that I feel better about the world when all my clothes are in color order in the closet. But the last two weeks have been … [Read more...]

I took full advantage of the ability to read anything I wanted to while I was in the hallowed halls of a town library. And when I was overwhelmed by classroom life, spending lunch in the school library reading the encyclopedias was my favorite form of self-care. After my first novel came out, a childhood friend sent me a picture (first photo) from my hometown library. I don’t have the right words to explain the pride I feel to know that my own books are on the same shelves that held the books that taught me about storytelling when I was a child. And last year, right before the shutdown, when I popped in to the San Francisco Public Library, I got a little misty-eyed when I found a copy of STAY, with Argo’s beautiful face looking up at me (second photo). It is a powerful thing for our communities to have public libraries and the support of librarians who work so hard to cultivate safe spaces and free access to information and literature. Happy National Library Week to all of you. #nationallibraryweek
