What do you create? Scripts for the television box and now the bigger screen thingee. And when I'm not on the clock or in a contractual situation, I definitely try to "create" more scripts. For fun and for free. And in hopes that something will pay off down the road. I "create" a lot of photos, too. And hacky tweets. Other than that, I look at each day as an opportunity to create fun and controlled chaos. Why do you create? I honestly do not know how to do it differently! I've basically structured my life so I can do nothing but create -- it's who I am -- and can't imagine … [Read more...]

What do you create? Stories, mostly. I love writing blog posts and (attempting) to write books. You can generally find me blogging over on BookRiot with some amazingly passionate bookish people, occasionally on The Huffington Post in their books section, and over on Quirk Books’ blog, the publisher where I work. I also started a local geek blog, Geekadelphia. You can find my prattling about local geek culture in Philadelphia there pretty frequently. As for books, I like writing Young Adult books and humor. My first YA novel, Inked, comes out this month, and my first humor book, The … [Read more...]

What do you create? I create... many different things! First and foremost I am an illustrator. Then, I'm also an animator. In addition to that I've recently rediscovered making comics. I write songs and perform them with my band in and around NYC. Basically if I find something interesting I'll probably want to try it out to some degree. I'd go on but I'll just stop here. Why do you create? Amazing question! Being able to create, in general, can be so gratifying! An imagination allows your mind to wander into an idea, which basically wasn't there a minute ago, and from there it … [Read more...]

What do you create? Babies, apparently. My husband and I have two kids already and we found out late this summer that we were (very unexpectedly) pregnant with twins! We’re still getting over the shock. But when I’m not procreating, I’m writing novels. My first book BEFORE I GO is a love story of sorts about a young woman who’s dying and decides to find a new wife for her husband before she passes, so she knows that he’ll be taken care of. I also write magazine articles, essays and grocery lists. Why do you create? It’s really a favor to my husband Fred, so that I’m easier to … [Read more...]

What do you create? I create all manner of things. I would consider most of everything I make as sketching:the process of putting thought to form. I don’t believe anything I have ever made is finished or polished in a state of what I would consider “done”. I draw, I paint, I animate, I design, I make digital illustrations, I code, I build games, design websites, set type, I design and build physical products, product experiences, I make cardboard and ceramic sculpture, I draw on coffee cups, I take photographs and document my surroundings. I am fascinated by the act of creating something … [Read more...]

What do you create? Ostensibly, I'm a songwriter and I create songs. But I've created a lot of seemingly different things over the years. Growing up, I was an avid visual artist and for a long time everyone just assumed I'd go into graphic arts or design of some kind. Then I got really into ecology and started doing a lot of finely detailed pen-and-ink scientific illustration. Then I got a masters degree in evolutionary biology and I had to wield a fair amount of creativity to develop hypotheses and solve problems with experimental design. Though I've been a professional musician for 15 … [Read more...]

What do you create? I’m a singer/songwriter/pianist and have been writing songs since I was 18 years old. I create music, both songs with music and lyrics and improvised solos in the moment when playing piano. These are two very distinct thrills for me. Writing a song is like having one idea that excites me and spending the next hours, days, months or years putting together a complete sonic picture like someone may work on a puzzle. Then with an improvised piano solo, the creation is a free flow of ideas that are born of the moment with no right or wrong. The last few years, I turned a … [Read more...]

What do you create? I write what some call “foodie rom coms” – short for food-themed romantic comedies. Other people have called it chick lit, lighthearted women’s fiction, and foodie lit. I just write the stories inside me and try not to label them. Why do you create? I like making something that can bring a smile to someone’s face, including my own. When I’m in a groove and write a scene that is working, it’s like a drug – I can’t get enough. But what’s even better is when someone else reads that scene and has a similar reaction. I recently received a message from a reader … [Read more...]

What do you create? Books, five of them, six if you include the one I’m wrestling with right now. (So…five and a half?) I also create lots of tweets, though fewer than I used to (social media burn out is real, yo), and celebrity interviews. Though I’m not sure I really “create” those, so much as get to chat with actors I really admire and write up our conversations. If that’s considered “work,” count me in. Why do you create? Gosh, what a profound question! Hey, I thought this was going to be easy! I don’t know, to be honest, other than I think I’ve always had these…voices … [Read more...]

What do you create? I make durable leather goods by hand for my company Quilty Co. It was something I was always interested in, this idea that one could take a raw "ingredient" and turn it into something tangible that would last a long time, so I started teaching myself using leather scraps from Michaels craft stores. Now I've got a full workshop and I make wallets, notebook covers, key holders, bracelets, and assorted other things and I am slowly growing the business. Why do you create? I have always created, whether it was music in high school, movies in college, or by … [Read more...]
