3Ws – Cassandra Dunn

October 22, 2014 Filed Under: 3Ws, books are awesome, writing

What do you create? I write novels and short stories, and occasionally blog posts, but those are a tad inconsistent these days. My debut novel, The Art of Adapting, came out this summer from Touchstone/Simon & Schuster. It's the story of a family in transition: Lana is recently separated and seeking a balance between caring for her family single-handedly and caring for herself. Lana's brother Matt, who has Asperger's Syndrome, moves in with Lana after he suffers an accidental overdose. Lana's children, Byron and Abby, are in the thick of their own teen dramas, reluctant to warm up to … [Read more...]

What do you create? Television shows.  (Ugh, that always sounds odd to me.  Because truthfully — I'm but a cog in the much larger, hulking machine of a television show.  It's not as if a show bursts forth, fully formed from my forehead.  I'm not Zeus.  There are easily a few hundred other people that take whatever mediocre ideas we come up with and adjust/adapt/improve until they are so SO so much better.  The beauty of collaboration!  But the process usually starts with someone like me putting ink on paper.  And while you probably didn't need most of this parenthetical babble, it fills up a … [Read more...]

What do you create? Plays for stage and screen. My latest film, The Paper Store, was adapted with creative- and life-partner Nicholas Gray from my play 516 [five sixteen]. It’s in post now. My latest play Two Front Teeth was most recently named a finalist for the National New Play Network showcase; before that it appeared at the Kitchen Dog Theater’s New Works festival in Dallas. Broadly, my scripts are about good people who do very bad things. If you like morally commendable heroes who light the lamp for justice, my stuff may not be for you. And that’s ok. If, on the other hand, you’re … [Read more...]

What do you create? sounds and images I sing with my husband Forest Sun. We do an ongoing live music series called the Porch Sessions. Here's a song we recorded in Tulsa, OK with our friend Jesse Aycock playing dobro. I've just made my first short film! "All Sales Final" is debuting at the Asheville Cinema Festival in November. I wrote and directed the film and composed and played the original score. I love photography, playing the piano, singing and I'm learning the cello. I love to cook, I like long walks on the beach and quiet candlelight dinners. Why do you create? Creation … [Read more...]

What do you create? Having thought about this for thirty years, it's this: I create evenings of musical experience. I mean, I write songs, and I make records, and sell those records, and my music gets played on the radio and in people's houses and in their cars... but all I ever wanted to really do was play gigs. Ever since I was little. And that's what I've done: played gig after gig, hundreds of nights a year for decades now. It's ephemeral: there's a thing that happens when the singer, the listener, and the song all come together and click. Whatever that ineffable THING is, that's what I … [Read more...]

What do you create? i create theatre and music, many times simulatenously... but these days, i've been creatively invested the most in making roadPorn. roadPorn is the experience of music and byway melding into one, bound by the common expression, "the journey is the destination". LPfunK Inc., my production company, produces roadPorn music videos & simulated road-trip movies by tracing the convergence of rhythmic, harmonic, and melodic vibrations with the visual component of HD / p.o.v. scenic road footage. the result is an engaging, educational, and sensory-stimulating, kinetic … [Read more...]

3Ws – Eric Wilder

October 3, 2014 Filed Under: 3Ws, books are awesome

Hey guys! I'm back and I've brought friends. I've been thinking of good ways to use this beautiful blog Ashley at Little Leaf Design made for me. I've always been fascinated with creativity, so decided I'd take the opportunity to ask the creative people I admire some questions about what makes them tick. My friend, Eric Wilder, has agreed to be my guinea pig. And maybe once the waters on the blog feel warm again, I'll add a few updates of my own. What do you create? I write. My latest personal creation is a collection of mock-tabloid satire I wrote called I, Humpty. The book … [Read more...]

All My Life by Evan Dando is one of my favorite so All My Life by Evan Dando is one of my favorite songs, and today when I was in the car, iTunes churned it up, and I thought, ‘I bet I can play that,’ so when I got home I did. And it was immensely satisfying. So, I thought I’d share my messy first draft, because there’s a lot of joy to be found in just doing the thing you hoped you could do. This gave me joy. Thank you, @kenwilcoxguitar for teaching me things that made this possible. #awkwardguitar #evandando #allmylife #coversong
Two things there are never enough of: 1. Delightfu Two things there are never enough of: 1. Delightful books 2. Mid-life love stories. @thenormannation has given us both. Matt and I have a running joke about our literary rivalry, but truth is he’s a truly kind, keenly observant, super smart human with a very big heart, and one of the great joys of reading his books is how beautifully all of that shines through in his writing. Charm City Rocks (out today!) is so much fun to read, and I know it will be a bright spot in your summer. You don’t even have to take my word for it. Roxy can smell a hit. #matthewnorman #charmcityrocks #bookstagram #dailyroxydog #dogstagram
