3Ws – James Comtois

April 7, 2016 Filed Under: 3Ws, theatre, writing

What do you create? Plays, mostly. Or to be more specific, scripts — I usually need a lot of help getting the scripts turned into full productions of plays. From about 2000 until about 2013, I co-ran a theatre company in New York called Nosedive Productions with our mutual pal Pete Boisvert. Through Nosedive, we staged several of my plays, which was a great deal of fun. I’ve recently stepped away from producing so I can just be a playwright for a little while. That may change in the future, but for now, I really like just being the chef (rather than the chef, the server, the maître-d’ and … [Read more...]

3Ws – Julie Buxbaum

What do you create? Novels. My first two books (The Opposite of Love and After You) were what people in publishing call “contemporary women’s fiction” and my most recent book (Tell Me Three Things) which just came out (!!!), is considered “young adult,” though I like to think my books are for everyone. But really what I create are characters who I come to love and know over the year (or years depending on the book) that I spend writing them. And from there comes plot and then ultimately (hopefully) words and eventually I create a pile of pages that somehow (hopefully) turns into a novel … [Read more...]

What do you create? Whether through my new novel (Destiny Lingers), my news stories (with Dr. Drew on HLN), podcasts, paintings, acting (will be on BounceTV's "In the Cut"), stand-up comedy (will be at The Comedy Store on April 1), voice-over work (as Professor Wiseman on "Curious George," announcer on "Divorce Court," and Warrior Priestess Illaoi on League of Legends video game), or speeches, I create good stories that enlighten, inform, entertain, and hopefully move people in a positive way.   Why do you create? I create because I just can't stop! I'm like an energizer … [Read more...]

What do you create? Mainly songs and drawings. I also try to recreate myself on an as-needed basis.   Why do you create? I create because it makes me feel good. It eases my mind and brings me joy. I feel natural and free and close-to-harmless when I’m making music or drawing. It’s great!   What do you consume? You know what it is with consuming things?…. I feel like I’m in this strange kind of obstacle course at all times. The idea is to consume things and ideas that are good for me and lift me up and strengthen me, and NOT consume things and ideas that are … [Read more...]

3Ws – Charlie Donlea

What do you create? Novels with strong female protagonists.   Why do you create? The most magical part of reading is finding that rare book you don’t want to put down. That special story you can’t wait to get back to, the one you think about all day long. The book you’re disappointed to finish because it might be a while before you find another one that’s as good. I love finding those types of books. And that’s why I write. I want to create that magical book. The one that calls the reader back to it after they’ve put it down, and that preoccupies their mind until they’ve … [Read more...]

3Ws – Nora Jane Struthers

What do you create? I create compassion.   Why do you create? By seeking to understand my most authentic self, by sharing this process and my findings through my songs, and by performing this experience of discovery at every live show, I hope to inspire others to seek an understanding of their own authentic selves, and value others authentic selves, though they may be formed by very different life experiences.   What do you consume? Grass-fed organic beef and dairy, The Marvel Universe movies and TV shows, books by Amy Tan, Kurt Vonnegut, and Larry McMurtry, … [Read more...]

What do you create? Novels that take you to the core of local society of my city, Dubai. There are not many books written about this small corner of the world, despite all the publicity surrounding it and the portrayals of what it has become: a glittering metropolis that not many realize was a small desert town just twenty years earlier.   Why do you create? I am a television director by profession, and I spent over twenty years producing features and documentaries from all over the world. It was the best combination of pleasure and work—giving free reign to … [Read more...]

What do you create? Literary Advil. That’s how I jokingly describe my novels. I like to think, given the sugarcoating of a story on the outside, the reader doesn’t realize how much historical information they’re absorbing—at least not until the book is over.   Why do you create? Originally inspired by my grandparents’ WWII love letters, I wrote my debut novel largely as a tribute to a generation we’re losing much too quickly. I wanted to put faces and emotions to passages from history textbooks that meant little to me back in school. Since then, I’ve continued to stumble … [Read more...]

What do you create? Women’s fiction with a side of magical realism. Although we are taking a slight left turn with what we are writing next—women’s fiction with a healthy dose of suspense!   Why do you create? For as long as we can remember, we’ve had stories knocking around in our heads—ideas, insight, antidotes we want to share. It’s a release to get our plots down on paper, to craft characters and dig deep into our imaginations; to channel real-life observations and experiences into fictional dilemmas. We create because we can’t not create.   What do you … [Read more...]

3Ws – Vicki Abelson

What do you create? I make great humans. Two to be exact. One male, one female. And, interestingly, they’re incredibly superior to the sum of my parts. I create chaos on occasion. I try to minimize it as I mature (coughs) or, rather, channel it for good. In my work. I create nothing much of value with my hands, other than the words I type. And, potato latkes, chicken soup and parm, and the meanest brownies, anywhere. I swear. I can’t sculpt, paint or draw… I can’t even read my own handwriting… but, I do express my thoughts and feelings with uncensored abandon to the horror of … [Read more...]
