My sentiments exactly…

January 31, 2013 Filed Under: year in review

Yesterday, while I cleaned my office, the cat came in and puked on my 2012 date book, and I thought: exactly. I've been putting off posting because for the past few years I've done a year end wrap-up post, but right now I don't want to look back.  Last year was one of the roughest I've been through, punctuated by the loss of one of my dearest friends. So I'm not going to do a wrap-up this year.  2012 can bite my shiny metal....oh, I watch too much Futurama.  Still, I managed to accomplish a great deal in 2012 and my goal for this year is to see those accomplishments through. My other … [Read more...]

2011 in Review

January 7, 2012 Filed Under: year in review

Here's my review from 2010, and here's 2009 part one & part two. 1. What did you do in 2011 that you’d never done before?I went rock climbing! On actual rock! We stopped in Asheville on the way to Florida this spring, and had the most patient guide (Ron Funderburke at Fox Mountain Guides). I got the shakes and was going to just hang back and watch while J climbed, but Ron helped me get past my fear and do some climbing. It was a great experience. 2. Did you keep your new year’s resolutions, and will you make more for next year?Last year, spurred by the somewhat horrific realization that … [Read more...]

2010 in Review

January 10, 2011 Filed Under: year in review

I love this meme!  It's such a nice way to reflect on the past year.  I swiped it from Jess again.  Here's my review from last year:  part one & part two. 1. What did you do in 2010 that you’d never done before? There's that whole having a book published thing, and going on a book tour.  I also made a quilt. 2. Did you keep your new year’s resolutions, and will you make more for next year?I didn't really make any, so does that count as keeping them?  This year, I've decided I will eat fewer marshmallows (notice I did not say I'm giving them up), finish my next book, and learn how to sew from a … [Read more...]

I took full advantage of the ability to read anything I wanted to while I was in the hallowed halls of a town library. And when I was overwhelmed by classroom life, spending lunch in the school library reading the encyclopedias was my favorite form of self-care. After my first novel came out, a childhood friend sent me a picture (first photo) from my hometown library. I don’t have the right words to explain the pride I feel to know that my own books are on the same shelves that held the books that taught me about storytelling when I was a child. And last year, right before the shutdown, when I popped in to the San Francisco Public Library, I got a little misty-eyed when I found a copy of STAY, with Argo’s beautiful face looking up at me (second photo). It is a powerful thing for our communities to have public libraries and the support of librarians who work so hard to cultivate safe spaces and free access to information and literature. Happy National Library Week to all of you. #nationallibraryweek
