My dog pack

July 7, 2011 Filed Under: Argo the wonder dog, beautiful things, dogs, STELLA

Argo & Stella

So, yesterday, I let the dogs out while I was exercising.  I finished up and was about to go take a shower.  I closed the door to the yard, and made sure I closed the bedroom door, because Argo, when left to his own devices in the bedroom will strip the blankets off the bed (I don’t know why).  I double checked to make sure Stella wasn’t in the bedroom, because I’ve accidentally closed her in there before, and she gets upset about it.

I was just about to turn the water on in the shower when I heard the hollow heaving sound of Argo starting to puke.  I raced to the door and opened it, only to find that Stella had accidentally been locked outside.  Argo didn’t really have to puke.  He was perfectly fine the second I opened the door.  He was just trying to get my attention so I’d let Stella back in.  A 105lb dog starting to heave will always, always get my attention, and Argo uses this to his advantage.

They couldn’t have been apart for more than five minutes, but oh, the celebration they had when they were reunited – prancing around, nibbling and sniffing each other like Stella had just come back from a long, long journey.

I absolutely, completely and totally love the way my dogs love each other.  It’s a beautiful thing to watch their friendship.

I have a complicated dog pack. Sydney and Pressly LOVE each other. They have since the minute they met. If anything happens to Pressly Sydney is right there to help and vice versa. Our newest member, Luna is sort of an outsider. Sydney likes her but can be overwhelmed by her. Pressly and Luna really don’t like each other at all, but have found they love trying to race each other from the back door to the grove of trees in our backyard. Its funny they ways they have connected and how they very much want to know what the other is doing even if they aren’t all madly in love. Although 3 dogs can be a bit much, I love watching them interact and I understand my dogs better because of it.

I love this post. Thank goodness other people have dog packs! Whenever I have to seperate one of my four for training they act like they haven’t seen each other in forever when I put them back together! I also love how they love each other, and how they love me!

That’s really sweet (well, except for the puke part). I’ve loved watching how attached our dogs have become. They don’t puke when separated, but they do become the most pitiful, mopey dogs you’ve ever seen.

Sneaky Argo! I can’t believe he’s figured out that pretending to puke will get your attention! He must be a smart one.

A few days ago, I took this photo of turkeys while A few days ago, I took this photo of turkeys while I was out on a run, marveling at how wild animals do not seem to mind when they see me. Once, I almost bumped into a deer, the way a couple might meet-cute in a rom com. We just didn’t see each other. I’ve always thought it was a fun little quirk. Not even bunnies are afraid of me. But this afternoon on my run, I came up over a hill and was suddenly within fifteen feet of a wild boar. Thankfully, a year or two ago I got curious about the big traps that show up trailside around the bay, looked them up and learned about how fast, ruthlessly aggressive, and unpredictable a wild boar can be. Otherwise, I might have (stupidly) thought I was in the middle of another one of my Snow White moments and been all “Hello there, Mr. Pig! Look at you!” believing that I could quietly observe in wonder. Instead, I knew this was a bad situation. The boar grunted and moved to the center of the trail. It felt very ‘You shall not pass!’ But I did not want to pass. I wanted to get away. I backed slowly for a few moments and then turned and ran faster than I ever have in my whole life. I’ve since learned that there’s no way that boar chased me, because there’s no chance of outrunning a boar (climb a tree if you can). But I know that boar saw me and also wasn’t happy about the surprise, and I had a moment, racing back over the hills I’d just run — not daring to look behind me more than once or twice in fear I’d lose my footing — when I truly did not know what would happen. I’ve been in scary situations, but they were a different kind of scary. I don’t think I’ve ever flat out run for my life before, but that’s truly what I thought I was doing. Right now I am still full of adrenaline and also exhausted and so so thankful to be okay.
