I’m honored that HOME OF THE AMERICAN CIRCUS is a Book of the Month pick for May! And @bookofthemonth is announcing my book a little early because it’s ALSO included in the @todayshow Spring Favorites Box and was featured on the Today Show this morning!

Book of the Month has been around since 1926, and it means so much to me to have another novel included in their literary history. I put my whole heart into writing this novel, and I hope Book of the Month readers will enjoy HOME OF THE AMERICAN CIRCUS. ❤️🐘

Something I wasn’t anticipating is that if you grew up in the home of the American circus and write a book called Home of the American Circus, seeing the title over and over again is super surreal.

You know how some words or combos of words just feel like part of you? In the same way that I hear the name Roxy, think “That’s my dog’s name!” and immediately picture her, Home of the American Circus makes me think, “That’s my hometown!” Every time I see the book, I’m flooded with sense memories of the Elephant Hotel, the statue of Old Bet, and the tree I used to climb, and the hill that was so hard to bike up, my leaky old rowboat, and the glorious little library where I was allowed to read anything I wanted.

I never really listened to the lyrics, so I’d assumed this was a song about Josie and some kind of consensual vacation fling. This song (especially in its entirety) is so specifically toxic that I’m truly hoping it’s a character study of a creepy dude and I missed a level. I hope Josie did have an awesome vacation romance and then maybe decided to stay away and have a nice life. And I hope that poor young girl has some good friends and a caring therapist. #awkwardguitar

I was listening to @goodhangwithamy’s interview with Kathryn Hahn today. In describing their friendship, Amy talked about how you never really know when or how you’ll meet someone who becomes a friend and what a beautiful surprise that is.

Many, many things had to line up the right way to create a chance for connection with my dear friend and podcast partner @alicecarbonetench and I’m very glad they did. Alice is brave, wise, and exquisitely thoughtful. Getting to make @nowthatwethinkaboutit with her is an energizing adventure—we’re learning so much together and we’re a really good team.

Over the weekend, Alice carved out some space from her meditation retreat to meet up. It was so joyful to spend time together in person again. I’m excited for all we’ve started and all we have ahead. And I’m very thankful for the beautiful surprise of our friendship.
