What do you create?

Novels with a historical dimension that generally involve disused epistemologies or historically contingent modes of understanding. Also, magic and sometimes animals.

Why do you create?

Because it’s the best way to get at the questions that interest me, and because I’m categorically unqualified to do anything else.

What do you consume?

Nineteenth century seafaring narratives. Bandwidth. Fake meat.

It’s National Library Week. As a child, the libr It’s National Library Week. As a child, the library was my precious refuge. I took full advantage of the ability to read anything I wanted to while I was in the hallowed halls of a town library. And when I was overwhelmed by classroom life, spending lunch in the school library reading the encyclopedias was my favorite form of self-care. After my first novel came out, a childhood friend sent me a picture (first photo) from my hometown library. I don’t have the right words to explain the pride I feel to know that my own books are on the same shelves that held the books that taught me about storytelling when I was a child. And last year, right before the shutdown, when I popped in to the San Francisco Public Library, I got a little misty-eyed when I found a copy of STAY, with Argo’s beautiful face looking up at me (second photo). It is a powerful thing for our communities to have public libraries and the support of librarians who work so hard to cultivate safe spaces and free access to information and literature. Happy National Library Week to all of you. #nationallibraryweek
